Two Ph.D. openings -  2026 Cohort

The Berkeley Wood Lab (Prof. Paul Mayencourt) and the Spatial Systems Lab (Prof. Ramon Weber) are opening two Ph.D. positions for research in the field of computational and generative design, structural design and optimization, timber engineering, and low-carbon construction.

The Ph.D. positions are offered both through the department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management (Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy and Management) and/or the department of Architecture (Ph.D. in Architecture). The Ph.D. research will be supported by new research facilities at the Richmond Field Station on campus at the University of California, Berkeley.

Potential research topics include :

  • computational design, optimization, and fabrication of low-carbon timber floor systems

  • Molded-veneer fabrication, engineering, and architecture

  • Low-carbon construction systems

The candidates are expected to be fluent in or eager to learn digital tools and have hands-on experience with prototyping.
